ROCK SPRINGS, WY ─ The Rock Springs-Sweetwater County Airport Joint Powers Board was recently awarded $5,577,820 in Federal Aviation Administration, Wyoming Business Council, and Wyoming Department of Transportation grant funds. The grant funds provide substantial support for several projects slated for construction/completion in the next 12-18 months:

  • RWY 9/27 Rehabilitation Beginning August 8, 2016, the airport will undertake a 4-week rehabilitation of its primary commercial service runway. The $4,461,867 project was awarded to Lewis & Lewis, Inc and is funded by $4,183,000 in Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program funds, $167,320 in Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics Funds, and $111,547 in local airport funds. The rehabilitation will include the milling of 190,000 square yards of old runway surface, installation of 26,000 tons of new asphalt, 155,000 square feet of pavement markings, replacement of 9.5 miles of electric cabling, and the reclamation of over 8,000 cubic yards of pavement millings for use on City Streets, Alley’s, Parking Lots, and Bike Paths. Further information regarding this project can be found here.
  • General Aviation Terminal & Hangar Facility A $5.48-million-dollar project that is slated for completion in late 2017/early 2018 will replace the airport’s existing 1920’s General Aviation Hangar and 1940’s General Aviation Terminal. This project will be funded by $3,000,000 in Wyoming Business Council Community Readiness Program funds, $2,000,000 in Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program Funds, and $480,000 in Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics Funds. Currently the airport has received $1,000,000 from the Wyoming Business Council and $180,000 from Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics. The remaining grant funds will come in throughout the next 12-18 months as the project progresses from design to construction phases.
  • Airport Marketing The Wyoming Department of Transportation Aeronautics Commission allows commercial service airports to apply for a grant to match up to 50% of direct advertisement and promotion of an existing or future commercial air service provider. Additionally, funds may be used for the promotion of the usage of the airport, its services, the fly local concept, and the creation and analysis of reports, studies and surveys used to enhance advertising efforts. RKS recently accepted $47,500 in grant funds to cover 50% of its marketing program.

“These grants serve as evidence of the continued support of the Rock Springs Sweetwater County Airport’s role as a commercial service airport in Southwestern Wyoming by the FAA, WYDOT, and Wyoming Business Council,” said Airport Manager, Devon Brubaker. “These funds will not only help boost safety and compliance with new federal airport design standards, they will help ensure that the airport continues to grow as a major economic engine for Sweetwater County.”
